TACKLING DRUG ABUSE AND YOUTH VIOLENCE IN KANO:A Proactive Approach for Lasting Peace. By Tijjani Sarki

Kano, the capital city of Kano State, has been grappling with the rising menace of thugs and criminal activities, often tied to rampant drug abuse. For months, these elements have caused significant distress to the public, leading to negative socio-economic consequences for the state.

In response to this escalating crisis, the Kano State Government has taken a bold step by launching a task force aimed at addressing the issues of drug abuse and substance misuse. This initiative is a proactive measure to mitigate the harmful impact of these problems on public safety and well-being.

We commend the remarkable leadership of Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for the timely establishment of the 21-member Kano State Peace and Youth Rehabilitation Committee. This thoughtful initiative highlights his commitment to ensuring long-term peace and rehabilitating the youth of the state. The task force is spearheaded by Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, the Honorable Commissioner of Science, Technology, and Innovation, with key members including Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, Honorable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, and representatives from various security agencies.

During the inauguration, Governor Yusuf emphasized the critical role of the task force and praised its well-rounded composition, which brings together seasoned professionals in security, community development, and youth rehabilitation. He charged the committee with the responsibility of collaborating closely with security agencies to tackle pressing issues such as phone snatching, gang violence, and, notably, substance abuse, establishing an urgent mandate to restore public safety throughout the state.

The formation of this task force represents a strategic and forward-thinking approach to tackling the complex challenges facing Kano State. The committee’s engagement with key stakeholders marks a crucial first step toward fostering unity and a collaborative response to these issues. One particularly promising development is the proposal to integrate the Safe Corridor group into the task force. By pooling resources and efforts, this consolidation will ensure a more comprehensive and impactful approach to addressing youth violence and substance abuse.

The success of the Kano State Peace and Youth Rehabilitation Committee will depend on the collective efforts of all stakeholders, including traditional leaders, security agencies, religious figures, community organizations, and the public. Such collaboration has the potential to significantly reduce drug abuse, curb crime, and restore peace to the region.

Moreover, the establishment of the Kano State Drug Abuse Law Enforcement Agency currently awaiting approval at the state assembly would provide a centralized body dedicated to combating drug-related issues effectively, complementing the task force’s work.

With Governor Yusuf’s strong leadership, the task force’s experienced personnel, and the support of influential community leaders, Kano State is poised to become a model of peace, security, and prosperity. This united effort holds the potential to transform the state into a safer, healthier, and more prosperous environment for all its residents.

While we commend the state government’s efforts, we hope the proposed Kano State Drug Abuse Law Enforcement Agency will soon be realized, with the bill currently pending at the state assembly.
