From the vibrant heart of Darma Quarters in Kano Municipal Council, Nigeria, emerged a visionary whose relentless pursuit of knowledge and excellence has shaped not only his life but also the future of many. Born on May 16, 1967, Professor Nazifi Abdullahi Darma’s early years were marked by a deep thirst for learning nurtured in humble classrooms from Yolawa Community Islamic School to Tudun Madatai Primary School and enriched by the spiritual guidance of Late Malam Muhammadu Dan Mainna at Quranic School.


What began as a simple quest for education soon blossomed into a remarkable journey of academic brilliance and dedicated service, proving that with determination and passion, humble origins are only the starting point for greatness.


This foundation propelled Professor Darma to Aminu Kano Commercial College and later to Bayero University Kano, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics with second-class upper division honors. His outstanding academic performance was recognized through prestigious awards such as the UAC Scholar of the Year and Afribank Prize for Best Final Year Student in Banking and Finance. His commitment to excellence continued with a Master of Science in Banking and Finance and culminated in a Ph.D. in Development Economics and International Finance, reflecting a lifelong dedication to learning and growth.


Professor Darma’s career trajectory is a powerful narrative of versatility and impact. Beginning in the dynamic banking sector with leading Nigerian institutions, he soon found his true calling in academia. Joining the University of Abuja as an Assistant Lecturer in 1996, he devoted himself to nurturing future economists, earning a professorship by 2017 through relentless scholarship and mentorship of over 300 students.


Beyond academia, his expertise significantly shaped Nigeria’s economic landscape. From leading research at the Debt Management Office to directing vital departments within the National Planning Commission, and coordinating the National Economic Council Secretariat, Professor Darma brought insight, integrity, and visionary leadership to each role. His contributions also include serving as a Special Economic Adviser to the President of the Nigerian Senate and being an influential member of the central working group on Nigeria Agenda 2050, playing a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s long-term development strategy.


His talents and leadership were recognized at a regional level when, in 2022, he was appointed Commissioner for Internal Services at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). In this pivotal role, Professor Darma leads key departments such as Finance and Treasury, Human Resources, Administration, and Information Technology. Under his visionary stewardship, ECOWAS has witnessed transformative changes, enhancing professionalism, efficiency, and innovation within the commission’s internal operations, thereby paving the way for sustainable development and economic integration across West Africa.


A passionate advocate for regional collaboration, Professor Darma has continually emphasized ECOWAS’ critical role in promoting economic growth and integration. He has championed initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between regional economic institutions and member states, encouraging results-based project management and good governance to maximize ECOWAS’ impact on the community.


A prolific researcher, Professor Darma’s work addresses pressing macroeconomic challenges including inflation, unemployment, and the impacts of oil price shocks, offering vital insights that guide policymakers across the region. His global outlook is enriched by participation in over 21 prestigious international leadership and management programs, including Harvard Kennedy School’s Innovation for Economic Development and IMF training on External Debt Statistics, ensuring his approach blends local realities with global best practices.


Community Engagement and Impact


Deeply connected to his roots, Professor Nazifi Abdullahi Darma is not only a proud son of Darma and Kano State but also a pillar of his community. Throughout his career, he has been committed to giving back by initiating and supporting numerous development programs spanning education, health, and mentorship. His efforts have uplifted countless youths and families, fostering empowerment and social progress. As a proud member of the Darma community, he has played a pivotal role in championing civil society organizations (CSOs) within Kano State. Notably, he serves on the Board of Trustees for Kano-LEAD(DaRUWANA), a prominent CSO focused on Advocacy,leadership and development, and actively contributes to the Kano Youth Promotion Council (KYPC), where his mentorship and guidance have inspired a new generation of leaders. Through these platforms, Professor Darma has demonstrated a relentless commitment to community service, helping to build capacity and create sustainable opportunities that nurture the potential of his people, a true testament to his philosophy of paying forward the blessings he has received.


Beyond his professional accomplishments, Professor Darma remains deeply connected to his roots and community. He is a devoted husband and father of five, embodying humility, dedication, and a spirit of service. His commitment to mentoring young minds and engaging in community development reflects a holistic approach to leadership, one that inspires and uplifts beyond borders.
