TACKLING DRUG ABUSE AND YOUTH VIOLENCE IN KANO:A Proactive Approach for Lasting Peace. By Tijjani Sarki Kano, the capital city of Kano State, has been grappling with the rising menace of thugs and criminal activities, often tied to rampant drug abuse. For months, these elements have caused significant distress to the public, leading to negative socio-economic consequences for the state. In response to this escalating crisis, the Kano State Government has taken a bold step by launching a task force aimed at addressing the issues of drug abuse and substance misuse. This initiative is a proactive measure to mitigate the harmful impact of these problems on public safety and well-being. We commend the remarkable leadership of Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for the timely establishment of the 21-member Kano State Peace and Youth Rehabilitation Committee. This thoughtful initiative highlights his commitment to ensuring long-term peace and rehabilitating the youth of t...

THE ALARMING IMPLICATIONS OF HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS AGAINST SENATE PRESIDENT Godswill Akpabio:Safeguarding Women's political Participation in Nigeria.

THE ALARMING IMPLICATIONS OF HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS AGAINST SENATE PRESIDENT Godswill Akpabio:Safeguarding Women's political Participation in Nigeria. By Tijjani Sarki It is deeply disheartening that in a nation striving to improve women’s political participation and encourage young girls to pursue education, we now face a situation that threatens to undermine these efforts. In many parts of Nigeria, cultural and religious barriers still restrict women's mobility and their ability to engage with men outside their immediate family. Against this backdrop, the behavior of Senate President Godswill Akpabio towards Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and similar actions-risks having a chilling effect on women's involvement in politics. Such behavior from a high-ranking official can discourage women from engaging in politics, as it creates an environment where they may fear mistreatment, marginalization, or retaliation. The allegations against the Senate President that he made inapp...

EMPOWERMENT IN THE NIGERIAN CONTEXT: The Idle Situation, Corruption, and the Path to Genuine Transformation.

EMPOWERMENT IN THE NIGERIAN CONTEXT: The Idle Situation, Corruption, and the Path to Genuine Transformation. By  Tijjani Sarki Empowerment is widely recognized as the process of equipping individuals with the knowledge, resources, and skills necessary to take control of their own lives. In an ideal scenario, empowerment allows people to harness their full potential, break free from poverty, and contribute to their society's overall development. However, in Nigeria, the concept of empowerment is often misunderstood and misused, particularly by those in political power. While the intention behind empowerment initiatives is to reduce idleness and underemployment, these efforts frequently fall short due to poor execution, lack of transparency, and misuse as political tools. In many cases, rather than uplifting the population, these programs perpetuate corruption, inefficiency, and the continued state of idleness. The Idle Situation in Nigeria With a population of over 200 mi...

COMBATING ILLICIT ACTIVITIES: The Need for Robust NGO Oversight in Kano State.

COMBATING ILLICIT ACTIVITIES: The Need for Robust NGO Oversight in Kano State. By Tijjani Sarki The need for profiling NGOs and donor agencies at the state level, especially in Kano State, is critical in developing robust internal frameworks that complement federal efforts. These frameworks would ensure that civil society organizations (CSOs) adhere to national regulations, promote transparency, and hold the NGO sector accountable, particularly in combating illicit activities such as money laundering. Several Nigerian states have already taken proactive steps to enhance oversight mechanisms for NGOs. For example, states like Borno, Lagos, and Edo have established dedicated committees or agencies to actively monitor NGO activities and ensure they operate within legal boundaries. This approach is essential to curbing corruption, misuse of funds, and criminal activities such as money laundering and human trafficking. These state-level efforts help address the increasing risks posed b...

APPLAUDING KANO STATE GOVERNMENT's FORESIGHT TO PROFILE NGOS AND DONOR ORGANIZATIONS IN KANO STATE

APPLAUDING KANO STATE GOVERNMENT's FORESIGHT TO PROFILE NGOS AND DONOR ORGANIZATIONS IN KANO STATE   By Tijjani Sarki I commend the Kano State Government for inaugurating the High-Powered Committee on Profiling NGOs and Donor Organizations. This decisive move underscores a strong commitment to ensuring that NGOs and donor organizations align with the state’s development priorities, values, and laws. The committee’s focus on transparency and accountability is critical, especially given the recent concerns regarding some organizations with fraudulent and evil activities  The allegations involving USAID-funded NGOs promoting terrorism-related activities highlight the urgency of this initiative. Reports linking certain foreign-funded organizations to illegal activities, including financing terrorism, make the establishment of this committee essential to protect Kano State from potential abuses and destruction of the good moral values and religious practices, under the guise ...

Re: DISTILLING THE CONTROVERSY ON THE RECENT KANO STATE GOVERNMENT'S ESTABLISHMENT AND iNAUGURATION OF THE COMMITTEE TO PROFILE NGOs AND DONOR ORGANISATIONS IN KANO STATE. By Tijjani Sarki

Re: DISTILLING THE CONTROVERSY ON THE RECENT KANO STATE GOVERNMENT'S ESTABLISHMENT AND iNAUGURATION OF THE COMMITTEE TO PROFILE NGOs AND DONOR ORGANISATIONS IN KANO STATE.  By Tijjani Sarki It is essential to address the concerns raised regarding the recent profiling of NGOs, CBOs, and donor agencies in Kano State, especially in relation to the provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) cited by the writer. While much of the discussion has focused on the constitutional validity of these actions, it is important to note that the core purpose of the profiling process is to ensure transparency and accountability—principles that are fundamental to sound governance both at the state and national levels. The provisions of CAMA, particularly those concerning accountability, are directly relevant to the actions being undertaken by the Kano State Government. The state's initiative is focused on ensuring that NGOs, CBOs, and donor agencies operate transparently, align wi...

RE: TRUE FEDERALISM

RE:TRUE FEDERALISM by Tijjani Sarki In response to Dr. Abbati Bako’s write-up on true federalism, it is essential to appreciate the insights and concerns raised about the challenges of adopting a federal system in Nigeria. While the concept of true federalism has been widely debated especially in terms of its potential benefits and risks it is crucial to approach this issue with a more nuanced perspective to understand how it can function effectively in Nigeria’s complex political environment. One key issue raised by critics, including Dr. Bako, is the concern that true federalism could lead to fragmentation, inequality, and conflict. While these concerns are valid, historical and contemporary examples of successful federal systems around the world demonstrate that decentralization does not inherently lead to division.  With careful structuring, federalism can enhance unity while promoting regional autonomy. Take, for example, Germany, Switzerland, India and the United States...
